Conformal Wearable Battery (CWB)

Duration: 2018 to 2020
Type: A joint project with ADA Technologies, Inc., USA, Phase II STTR NSF
Description: A wearable battery using a supercapacitor-based hybrid power system that can provide ~1kW in 5 seconds
Poster: An Optimal Control Scheme for Hybrid Power System with Synchronous Buck Converter, DAC Young Fellow 2021

Application

System Architecture

Using a modified synchronous buck converter to control the energy flow between a battery pack and a supercapacitor pack to provide a short burst of high-current electrical power while maintaining the continuous power supply during off-stage.

Control Policy

A four-state control policy is proposed to ensure the realiable output power and continuous power supply during different stages of operation.

Test Bench

Testing the hybrid power system with a battery pack and a supercapacitor pack.

System Integration

(a) Battery structure
(b) Required movement of edges
(c) Customized circuitry (6-layer PCB)

Experimental Results

Discharge results at 12V 70A in 5 seconds.
